Its very easy and they crack because people tighten the cap like a regular filter that has to compress the filter to make a seal. The cannister style filter on the 3.6 does not seal that way, the o ring is trapped between the cap and outer casing to make the seal.

It would have cooled better as well since there would be a larger area for a heat sink. Overtightening the oil filter cap can cause the body to crack so that should be done cautiously.
